Dude, I don’t know why…but whenever I would be called to do a makeup gig, I would literally carry 928536278188273 different shades of lipstick. I would hoard so much in my kit in fear of there being a possibility of me needing a certain color. Lol I always justified this behavior by telling myself “well..what if I need Ruby Woo or Morange?! ..maybe All Fired Up…ahhhh F*ck it, I’ll bring them all!”..And that’s when my hoarding began. At the time, I didn’t know how to depot lipstick! I didn’t think it would be this easy.
Now, Obviously in order to depot and condense your kit, the lipsticks you own do not have to be from MAC. The purpose of me specifying depotting only your MAC lipstick is because MAC has an awesome program called Back To MAC where you can give in 6 empty MAC containers (foundation, eye shadows, concealer, primers, basically anything in a bottle/jar) in exchange for a lipstick of your choice! Today I’m going to show you how to depot lipstick and score some FREE new lipsticks for yourself and your clients! 🙂
HOW TO DEPOT LIPSTICK!
CAUTION: because fire is involved, please DO NOT do this around kids. If you have a vast lipstick collection, You will be dealing with lots of pretty colors! We don’t want anyone getting All Fired Up! (that’s a MAC lipstick name if you didn’t know 😉 )
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- 24+ MAC lipsticks (or 6 MAC lipsticks and 18 of whichever brand)
- A candle
- A small knife/ small spatula (make sure it’s sanitized)
- An old spoon
- Tissue roll + damp cloth (to clean up any mess + to wipe down spoon)
- An empty lipstick palette
STEP ONE: Light Your Candle!
Once your candle is lit, take your lipstick and twist it all the way to the top! Use your small knife or spatula and cut off the lipstick from the root.
STEP TWO: Melting!
Place the piece of the lipstick on your spoon and hover the spoon over the candle. You might find that certain lippies melt quicker than others. This mainly depends on the finish of the lipstick (matte, lustre, etc).
STEP THREE: Pour It!
Quickly poor the melted lipstick in the palette! Take a damp cloth, wipe off your spoon and repeat steps 1 and 2. Don’t forget to clean up as you go. It can get a little messy. Wipe down the sides of the palette if necessary and try not to touch the melted lipstick. Let it set before you pick up the palette.
Here’s How Mine Came Out:
DON’T THROW AWAY YOUR EMPTIES! After you’re finished, store them in a ziplock bag and bring 6 of them at a time to a MAC Counter or you can do it online! 🙂
