Do you consider yourself a connoisseur in your niche? Can you endlessly go on on a parade of discussions regarding the same topic? I’m sure you love using the art of words to persuade, help, and inspire people. Don’t be overwhelmed if you don’t know where to start! Ask any blogger you know, or follow — We’ve ALL been there! When I first started out blogging, I was clueless as to how to start. I didn’t have it all figured out. As it is right now, I don’t consider myself a know-it-all, BUT I’m more knowledgable than I was a year ago!
I’ve been getting so many questions in regards to how to start a blog! As much as I wanted to help, I know I wouldn’t be able to effectively explain how to start a blog in a short reply. So this is my gift to you! I will break down the steps that I took when I first started blogging. I hope you find this helpful!
As the popular saying goes — Rome wasn’t built in a day. Take your time and try not to rush yourself out of excitement. It’s great that you’ve decided to take this step! While you’re flirting with the idea of starting your blog, ask yourself these 4 questions:
- What is my niche: What am I most passionate about?
- Who Am I talking to?
- How can I help people?
- What will make me different?
It’s okay if you get stuck answering these questions. Now that I’ve got you thinking, start jotting down some names that best suit who you are or what you’re most passionate about. This is the exciting part. You get to choose the name of your brand. This will be the birth of your virtual baby! Take your time and try not to think too hard on it. You don’t want to pressure yourself into a premature writers block.
[insert name here].com!
TIP: Make sure the name you decide is available as a domain name! Also, make sure that your blog name is available on *all* social media platforms (i.e: instagram, twitter, pinterest, tumblr etc). Seriously. Even if you don’t plan on using Pinterest or Tumblr, still make an account. The reason why I encourage you to is because we don’t need any idiot out there making you look bad on a different social media platform.
- Log on to Godaddy.com and type in your blog name in the space bar where it says ‘Enter a Domain Name’..in this case I entered justadopeblog.com (just a dope blog). You will also get other options such as .net, .nyc, .org and etc. Choose what tickles your fancy! *Make sure your name is clear and easy to remember!
Now that you’ve found the perfect domain name. Let’s look into hosting. First I’m going to answer your question……’But Chrissie, What’s hosting?‘ A host basically provides server space for your blog or website. In other words, it allows people to find your site on the internet. I purchased my domain and hosting plan from Godaddy.com! Don’t worry, I’ll walk you through it!
So below this is what you should have in your cart. When I first started out, I chose to do a plan that was 12 months because I didn’t want to purchase a domain and hosting plan for 3-4 years only to not be consistent and and shell out hundreds of dollars. Start small! When your hosting plan is up, you can always renew it 🙂
Press ‘Proceed to Checkout’. The total is the amount you’ll pay today. You won’t have to pay again for 12, 24 or 36 months, depending on the account plan you chose. After you purchase the domain and hosting, Godaddy will email you your receipt and tell you to wait approximately 24-48 hours before your domain name is live on the web. Take this time to draft some future blog posts!
Listen to me. WordPress is bae! I’ve been using WordPress throughout my 2-3 years of blogging so I’m a bit biased. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I recommend it to any and everyone looking to blog. WordPress has awesome plugins that just make life easier. It may seem like a lot to maneuver at first; but give it about 2 days, you’ll get the gist of how everything works.
Let’s get started shall we? Sign into your godaddy account. On the top right corner you should see your name. Hover over it and you will see a drop-down menu that looks like this:
- Select the option that says ‘Manage Your Hosting’
- You will be brought to a screen that shows your domain is ‘up and running with no issues’..Select the ‘Manage’ button
- Now that you are on the hosting details page, you will see popular apps like *cough* wordpress, joomla, etc. DOWNLOAD WORDPRESS.
- Upon downloading you will be greeted by a screen asking you where to download WordPress. Leave the directory blank! (‘/’)
- Remember to note your wordpress password and username.
- After it’s finished downloading..Sign in! 🙂
- On the left hand side you should see ‘Posts’..you can now start drafting a blog post!
Design & Start blogging!
Congratulations! You now have a blog! On the left hand corner of your dashboard. Select ‘Appearance’ and the ‘Themes’ from the drop down menu. Here you can add and remove wordpress themes! The possibilities are endless! You can also get your theme custom made for you, or purchase a theme like I did 🙂
TIP: Remember to carry a notepad with you at all times! Inspiration flirts with you at very random times. You might be at the doctor’s office waiting to be seen, and then BOOM! You’re thinking of a witty intro for your first #OOTD (Outfit of The Day) blog post. It’s great to have a notepad on you because thoughts leave just as swiftly as they come.
Stay tuned! I’ll be showing you which plugins I absolutely love!
